bonds record breaking homerun, barry bonds homeruns

For anyone who's been following the saga of Barry Bonds record breaking homeruns and the attendant fallout in the life of the beleaguered sllugger, here's the latest breaking news: the wife of Bonds' personal trainer is now being pressured by the Feds in their attempt to get the dirt on Barry Bonds. Nicole Gestas, the wife of Bonds' trainer Greg Anderson, has been told that as part of the investigation into whether Barry Bonds homeruns were the product of Bonds' steroid use, she is under criminal investigation. It's just one more way that the Feds are racheting up the pressure on Bonds, who is due to testify in Federal court this coming March. According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News published on June 20th, 2008, "Nicole Gestas, received a "target letter" from federal prosecutors in November, shortly after Bonds was indicted on perjury charges for allegedly lying to a federal grand jury about his use of performance-enhancing drugs."
Now, even if you think this whole affair is a tempest in a teapot because it's only about whether or not Barry Bonds homeruns are the products of steroid use, consider this fact: Bond is under indictment for perjury for lying in a Federal court about his alleged steroid use. If prosecutors can prove that in fact, Bonds did use steroids and then lied about it, he will probably do time in a federal pen. This is a big deal, because Bonds record breaking homerun will put him in the baseball record books, but if it can be proven that he did it by cheating through using steroids, then his record will be tarnished, and will be in the record book with an asterisk next to it, and his reputation as a stellar athlete will be sullied for all time. No one wants our sports heroes to be cheats and liars, no matter how good they appear to be. It's looking more and more like Barry Bonds will be doing some time next year and will spend the rest of his life after his release living under a cloud. He probably won't be the paraiah that O.J. Simpson became after getting away with multiple homicides, but it is doubtful that people will be buying DVDs featuring Barry Bonds homerun video or paying large sums for Bonds' record-breaking baseballs or other memorabilia. What a shame if it turns out that Bonds record breaking homerun really is the product of cheating with steroids. Barry Bonds homeruns were so impressive when they happened. Why couldn't Bonds play fair? Why did he have to let everyone (including himself) down?
